Spring…Clean…Green

March 25, 2008

Spring is here. The bees are buzzing, the flowers are blooming and the sun is shining. Reno is getting greener everyday.

Not to be outdone by nature, The City of Reno Council is doing its part to contribute to the greening of the city. One of Reno’s priorities is to enhance the city with living green standards.

In a news brief published 3/6/2008, the Council announced they have accepted a bid from Reliant Electric to install two solar energy systems. One will be installed at Fire Station #11 and the other at the City of Reno Corporation Yard. This project will not only contribute to the city’s “Green Living” goals but will save you, the taxpayer, money. In addition to the direct savings you will receive in the future, more than half of the project will be paid by a Sierra Pacific Power Company rebate program.

You can help in the effort to keep our city beautiful by participating in the Clean and Green projects being offered by the cities of Reno and Sparks.

Check your March water bill for a voucher. This voucher will allow residents a free visit to the Land fill. The City of Reno is also offering a limited number of hazardous waste vouchers.

Have an old bike you no longer want? A computer or other electronics you don’t know what to do with? Old tires in the garage or building material lying around? All of these can be dropped off at your neighborhood site. Bikes will be given to the Kiwanis Club, electronics to the Computer Corps., tires to Tires Plus, metals to Solid Waste Reduction Services and building materials to Habitat for Humanity for refurbishing and recycling.

The Clean and Green projects kicked off on March 15 and will run through April 30. For more information about Clean and Green locations, a schedule or to volunteer, you may call the respective city or visit their website. Or, as always, I will happy to answer any questions you may have.

Here is a toast to those of you who “green up” and a toast to our City Council

Meet EDAWN

March 18, 2008

Last week I told you that the Reno-Tahoe area has made several Best Cities lists especially in the area of business.

There is much talk about a sluggish economy and the possibility of recession. I am not an economist or a fortune teller; but I can tell you that a city with a strong and growing economy will fare much better in the future, recession or no recession, than a city with a stable or declining economy. I can tell you that because of EDAWN, the Greater Reno-Tahoe area has one of the strongest economies in the nation and the forecast in not only for new businesses to move here but for existing companies to expand and diversify.

Let me introduce you to EDAWN, the acronym for the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada. EDAWN is a very vital part of the Reno-Tahoe area.  EDAWN was founded in 1982 by community leaders to recruit business to the Greater Reno-Tahoe area and expand business for existing companies.

In 2002 EDAWN set a five year goal plan to generate $376 million in annual economic impact to the region. This year and five weeks ahead of schedule EDAWN surpassed this goal by $23 million dollars! Also due to their efforts Reno was named as the #! Place for Doing Business in America in 2005 by INC. Magazine as well as the best place for business recognition in 2006 and 2007 by other entities (see previous blog).

Last year alone 36 companies chose to do business in the Reno area or expanded their operations, creating over 1,600 new jobs. Many of these companies are in the business sectors that pay higher wages. This trend is expected to continue and a skilled labor force is in demand.

A strong business environment not only means people have jobs but it also means that more people will be able to achieve the American Dream – Homeownership. It means that people will own a home in a city that provides quality education and superior local services to its residents. It means that a city that is already considered one of the best places to live in America is only going to get better.

If you are considering a move to the Greater Reno-Tahoe Area, contact me about my free relocation package. As a relocation specialist, I can address your needs and concerns helping to ease the stress of a long distance move and supplying you with the information you need to make informed decisions in the housing arena.

Here’s a toast to EDAWN! Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah!

I have placed a link to EDAWN on my website because I believe in their importance to the Greater Reno-Tahoe area.

Job seekers can link to companies in the area currently hiring skilled positions.

Reno is world famous as “The Biggest Little City In The World”. Not a lot of people know exactly what that means but most think it is a great slogan. Reno is famous world-wide as a great gaming center.
Reno is gaining world fame as America ’s Adventure Place for its unmatched choices of outdoor recreation (in all four seasons), a wide range of cultural activities, top-notch entertainment and gaming all in a scenic setting.
Reno is also gaining a reputation as one of America ’s Best Places to live. As a Reno resident I certainly agree. Our family chose to come back to the Greater Reno-Tahoe area because we believe it is The Best Place To Live. Due to my husband’s career we had the privilege of living in great cities and states but Reno, Nevada was the one that won our hearts and the one we had to come back to.
Our reason for choosing Reno as our best place to live would not be the same as yours. The reasons people chose an area or a particular house as their abode are as many as there are “Best Places” lists. In  2007 and 2008 the Reno area has been ranked in the top 20 on seven different lists and has ranked in the top 100 cities on two others. This year Reno was ranked as.#8 in the Top Midsize Cities For Doing Business by INC. magazine. Reno-Sparks ranked as #2 in the Top 20 Small Metros For Best Economic Development Hot Spots, and Reno was also ranked as #2 Best City for Grilling by the Blue Rhino (I told you there are all kinds of “Best Cities” lists.
There are many reasons to choose the Greater Reno-Tahoe area as a place to live and only you know what your needs are but I would like to mention a few that may pique your interests:
Ø   Living options range from urban living to rural with suburbs in between.
Ø   The business-friendly environment both locally and on the state level is a haven for entrepreneurs as well as big business.
Ø   Four seasons living – Reno has all four seasons and yet is still considered to have moderate weather.
Ø   Recreation for every age and every taste, indoors or out.
Ø   Quality education
Here’s a toast to my best place to live Reno , Nevada
I have made several moves so I understand how stressful it can be to move across town, to another town, or across the nation. If you would like information on moving in the Reno-Tahoe area call me toll free at 866-600-5188.
In Reno for many, it will be wear nothing at all….on top of their heads that is.
Reno is celebrating and participating in St. Baldricks Day. Young and old, male and female are balding their heads for St. Baldrick’s Day and the Keaton Raphael Memorial on March 17 (aka St. Patrick’s Day). There will also be a Great Shave-Off held on March 29th for the Shriners Hospital Burn Awareness Campaign.
“Shavees” not only allow their head to be shaved but also donate to the cause with their teams which gather pledges, the funds are then donated to the St Baldrick’s Foundation. Some of the funds are directed to the Children’s Hospital and Research Center in Oakland which sends a team to the Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno to treat oncology patients there.
At the Great-Shave-Off top donators get to be the “shavers”. The event will be held at the Cal Neva, some of its top executives have volunteered to be “shavees” at the event. all funds raised will go the Shriners Hospital Burn Awareness Campaign. The first Shriner’s Hospital Burn Unit was opened in Galveston, Texas in 1966.  All services given at the Shriners Hospitals for Children are free, there is never a charge to the families they serve.
You don’t have to shave your head to participate, more pledges than heads are needed. If you decide to be a “shavee” for the St. Baldrick;s Foundation you must raise $100 or more to participate and pre-register.
This is the third year of the St. Baldrick’s Day event in Reno and the ninth year for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
Good people make good neighbors, good neighbors make great neighborhoods and great neighborhoods make great cities like the Greatest Little City In The World, Reno Nevada.
A Thank You and a toast to all the sponsors, hosts, “shavers”, “shavees”, and “pledgers” for contributing not only to these great causes but to contributing to our community making it a better and richer place to live.
If you would like to move to the Reno area and become part of our great community just contact me and I will help you locate the neighborhood that meets your real estate needs and wants.
