Music and magic will be yours to enjoy this Saturday (May 2nd) during Reno’s Pops Orchestra performance at the UNR campus in the ballroom of the Joe Crowley Student Union Building.  The Pops will be presenting a free performance beginning at 7 p.m.  The University’s Ballroom Club, the Pinkerton Dance Academy and The Never Enough Ballroom dancers will perform to the music of the Pops Orchestra.  Dancers will perform the various dances from around the world, including the intriguing tango, the romantic waltz, the magic of ballet and the vibrations of belly dancing.  To top off the evening, the magic of the dance will become interactive when the audience dances in a waltz to the beautiful strains of the Blue Danube by Strauss.

Musicians from all walks of life volunteer their time and talents to serve the Reno-Sparks community.  The Reno Pops Orchestra members volunteer their time to bring classical and other great music to the community through free and low-cost concerts.  I am sure the performance will be a delight to everyone attending.  In today’s budget-minded world, what could be better than great music, magical dance and a free ticket?

Reno’s Earth Day

April 20, 2009

Yesterday, there were several workshops at Reno’s Earth Day event in Idyllwild Park demonstrating each individual’s green power.  Green power is also an issue that the state of Nevada is taking seriously.  The state of Nevada currently holds the most aggressive energy plan for renewable energy in the nation.  Only 26 other states and Washington DC have a renewable portfolio in place.  Nevada’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) dictates that solar energy will supply at minimum 1% of the state’s total energy use.  Nevada Energy is working diligently to go above and beyond the RPS.  NV Energy supplies energy to the Reno-Sparks area and the greater part of the state of Nevada.

By 2015, solar, geothermal and wind power will supply over 15% of the state’s energy requirements.  The diverse landscape of Nevada gives our state the advantage of using wind power, solar energy and geothermal energy for producing electricity.  Nevada began using geothermal energy during the 1980s.  There are 15 geothermal plants in northern Nevada, including the Desert Peak plant just northwest of Reno.  At present, there are three new geothermal plants under construction.

At least, one large solar thermal plant is planned to be built in southern Nevada.  The unique thing about a solar thermal plant is that it is able to work at night as well as during daylight hours.  If the project is completed, it will be the first of its kind in the country.  A wind energy project is also in the works to be built near the town of Jackpot.  Turbines could be turning wind into energy as soon as 2011.

In addition, NV Energy is working to construct One Nevada Transmission Line (On Line) which would link the electrical systems of southern and northern Nevada.  The line would stretch from Las Vegas to the Ely area.

Here is a tip for Reno homeowners: Green power is also becoming increasingly important when selling your home.  When looking to do home improvements, it would be wise to consider not only asthetic beauty, but the use of energy efficiency and green products when making your improvements.

This may not exactly be “green power”, but it is your chance to flex the power of your voice and conserve on fossil fuel usage.  Council members Sharon Zadra and Jessica Sferrazza are using a green idea to get in touch with the Reno community.  There are three Fresh Air and New Ideas walking meetings planned for the next three weeks at noon.  Meet the council members on April 27th at UNR’s quad.  The May 4th  meet will be at the West Street Plaza of Wingfield Park at the footbridge.  The final meeting on May 11th will take palce at NV Energy at the flagpole.  Call the Reno Direct information line at 334-INFO for parking and additional info.  You can also emal Terri Hendry hendryt@cityofreno.com or call 775-326-6309.

Reno is Aces

April 13, 2009

The big historic day is almost here.  History will be made in Reno on Friday, April 17th at 6:05 pm, when the first pitch will bethrown at the Aces’ state-of-the-art stadium and playing field.  The Aces, Reno’s Triple A baseball team, will be playing their first home game to a sold out crowd!  The Aces will be playing against the Salt Lake Bees.  Friday’s game will begin a series of eight games to be played on the home field.  The Reno Aces are the region’s first Tripe-A team.  The team is part of the Pacific Coast League.  The Pacific Coast League is made of up of 16 major league teams.

The Aces Ballpark features 6,500 seats and every one of them will have a cheering fan in them on Friday and Saturday.  Both games have been sold out!  This is a great start for our new team and the $50 million stadium investment.  The Aces not only bring an exciting baseball season to Northern Nevada, but it is expected that the team and the Aces Ballpark will help to bring further revitalization to the downtown Reno area. You can take a peek at the Aces Ballpark via the city’s webcam.

The Aces will be playing 72 home games this season.  There will be several special promotional games with great giveaways and fireworks.  There will even be bobble-heads given out at three of the games.  Opening night fans will receive an Opening Day Pin.  In addition to the planned Fourth of July and Memorial Day spectacular fireworks displays, thirteen more of the Aces games will feature fireworks as well.  Check out the special game giveaways here: 2009 Reno Aces Promotional Schedule.

You can keep up with all the news and game results on the news page of the Aces’ Official Website.

The Animal Ark is located just a few minutes outside of downtown Reno.  Here, you can enjoy an up close and personal view of the Reno-Tahoe area’s wildlife.  The Animal Ark is not a zoo.  Instead, it can be compared to the legendary Noah’s Ark, a refugee for animals.  The Animal Ark is a 38-acre wildlife sanctuary and nature center.  The Animal Ark founders, Diana and Aaron Hiibel, care for local wild animals that can no longer survive in their natural environment.  Among the animals who receive perpetual sanctuary at Animal Ark are desert tortoises, a barn owl, foxes, wolves and a mountain lion named Milagro.

Animal Ark not only provides a home and loving care to these special animals, it also provides educational opportunities and opportunities for members of the Reno-Tahoe community to become involved.  Animal Ark is a non-profit organization which relies on the efforts of community volunteers, donations and visitors to support its’ endeavors.  Animal Ark provides education to Washoe County students regarding Reno-Tahoe’s wildlife and their habitats.  Animal Ark works hand-in-hand with the Washoe County School Board Science Curriculum, providing six full years of native wildlife education.

The Animal Ark reopened for the season on April 1.  They are opened Thursday though Sunday weekly.  Some weekends, they hold special showings, such as the upcoming Fading Spots Cheetah Dash on April 26.  On May 3, you can watch tigers, cheetahs, bears and wolves open their very own pinata at the Piñatas & Predators event

The Animal Ark began when Diana and Aaron adopted wild animals as pets.  They soon found out that that decision was not a wise one for themselves or the animals.  Although they adopted their animals for the wrong reason, Diana and Aaron did not give up on their dream.  They just changed their perception.  They learned how to protect wildlife which could no longer survive in their natural environment.  Diana and Aaron are those rare individuals that start with a little personal dream and make that dream a vision which enriches the lives of all those they touch, human or animal.
